WHY DYNO TESTING IS A NECESSITY FOR THE PERFORMANCE ENGINES OF TODAY

HOW DOES A DYNO WORK?

     AN ENGINE DYNO HAS A WATER BRAKE ATTACHED TO THE REAR OF THE ENGINE WHICH TRAPS WATER CAUSING THE ENGINE TO BE LOADED AS DESIRED BY THE OPERATOR.  AS THE ENGINE TRIES TO TWIST OR TORQUE THE WATER BRAKE, THE FORCE IS MEASURED BY AN ELECTRONIC TORQUE WRENCH.  THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE TRANSFERRED TO THE COMPUTER WHICH IN TURN GIVES A READ OUT OF TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER.  THIS ENTIRE OPERATION IS COMPUTERIZED WHICH PROVIDES ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS OF HORSEPOWER.

 

WHAT INFORMATION CAN I EXPECT FROM HAVING MY ENGINE DYNO TESTED?

     MANY PEOPLE THINK DYNOS ONLY FURNISH TORQUE AND HORSEPOWER READINGS.  TODAY'S DYNOS ARE ENTIRELY COMPUTERIZED, THEREFORE PROVIDING NUMEROUS DATA.  SOME OF WHICH ARE: AIR/FUEL RATIOS, EXHAUST TEMPS, WATER TEMPS, OIL PRESSURE, POWER/FUEL EFFICIENCY AND AIR FLOW.  ALL OF THIS INFORMATION TRANSLATES INTO THE BEST WAY OF TUNING AN ENGINE TO IT'S FULLEST POTENTIAL.  A PRINTOUT OF THIS DATA IS FURNISHED AND A FLOPPY IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

 

HOW CAN I PROPERLY BREAK-IN MY ENGINE SO IT IS READY TO PERFORM?

     PROPER BREAK-IN IS EASILY ACHIEVED ON THE DYNO BECAUSE OF THE MONITORED LOAD SYSTEM.  A NEW ENGINE NEEDS TO BE RUN UNDER THE CORRECT LOAD SYSTEM TO PRODUCE PROPER SEALING CONDITIONS.  DURING BREAK-IN OIL TEMPS AND WATER TEMPS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.  A RICH CARB OR LEAN CONDITIONS CAN SPELL INSTANT DEATH TO A NEW ENGINE.  ON A DYNO THIS IS MONITORED ALONG WITH AN OBERG OIL FILTER INSPECTION TO HELP INSURE A PROPER BREAK-IN SO YOUR ENGINE IS READY FOR RACING.

 

ARE DYNOS HARD ON ENGINES?

     IN THE PAST ENGINES WERE TESTED ON MANUALLY OPERATED MACHINES THAT EXTREMELY ABUSED AN ENGINE.  DATA WAS RECORDED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE WATCHING INSTRUMENTS WHILE THE ENGINE WAS STABILIZED AT A HIGH RPM FOR SUSTAINED PERIODS OF TIME.  THIS RESULTED IN A LIMITED AMOUNT OF DATA AND AN ENGINE THAT NEEDED REBUILDING IF IT ENDURED THE TESTING.  COMPUTERIZED DYNOS OF TODAY CAN MAKE A FULL POWER PULL THROUGH AN ENTIRE RPM RANGE IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS!  TESTS PROVE THAT A POWER PULL CREATES LESS STRESS THAN A LAP AROUND THE TRACK OR A RUN DOWN THE QUARTER-MILE.

 

HOW WILL DYNO TESTING IMPROVE MY TRACK OR STREET PERFORMANCE?

     A COMMON PROBLEM IN RACING OCCURS WHEN A DRIVER USES THE "SEAT OF THE PANTS" METHOD TO GEAR THE CAR.  KNOWING THE PEAK TORQUE, PEAK HORSEPOWER, AND WHERE THEY OCCUR TAKES THE GUESS-WORK AWAY AND LETS YOU GEAR THE CAR ACCORDINGLY.  RUNNING AN ENGINE WITHIN IT'S POWER RANGE NOT ONLY HELPS YOUR TRACK PERFORMANCE, BUT ALLOWS YOUR ENGINE TO LIVE LONGER.  THE SAME PRINCIPLES APPLY TO HIGH PERFORMANCE STREET DRIVING.

 

HOW MUCH CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND ON DYNO TIME?

     BASIC ENGINE COMBINATIONS CAN BE TESTED AS LOW AS $450.00.  A COMPLEX SET-UP OR ELABORATE ENGINE COMBINATION WILL BE SLIGHTLY HIGHER.  SPECIAL RATES ARE AVAILABLE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TESTING.  THIS IS INEXPENSIVE INSURANCE FOR THE SAFETY OR YOUR ENGINE.
